What is a First Holy Communion and What is Worn at One?
A First Communion or First Holy Communion is a very important rite of passage for members of the Catholic Church. Holy Communion is a colloquial term for the first acceptance of the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. This is seen as a very important event because the Eucharist is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. In a communion service, prayers are said, wine or grape juice is drunk and bread is eaten. The bread and wine or grape juice is used to symbolise the body and blood of Jesus Christ. In Eastern Catholic churches first communion is not generally practiced, instead Infant Communion is practiced. The actual ceremony is usually less flamboyant in Protestant churches.
Before Eucharist can be received, the sacrament Baptism should have been received as well. A week before their First Holy Communion catholic children make their first confession (the sacrament of Penance) since they must be without sin. Once the sins of the child have been forgiven, they are ready for their First Communion. Children attend classes to learn about this holy sacrament and why it is important. When Catholic children receive their First Holy Communion, it shows that they have reached a level of maturity and understand why communion is received. In Roman Catholic churches, First Holy Communions usually takes place at the age of either seven or eight as this is seen as the appropriate age.
Traditionally, this event is a very prestigious and festive occasion for Roman Catholic families. To celebrate a first Communion, there is a usually a large family gathering or a party. Depending on the rules of different parishes, different outfits are required to be worn. First Holy Communion outfits are white since white is a colour used to symbolise purity. The complete girl’s outfit is a white dress, white gloves, white shoes, white veil, cloth diaper, plastic pants, white tights and an underskirt. For boys some churches require a white suit with a white tie to be worn. However, if a white suit is not necessary according to rules of the parish, a white shirt with a coloured tie, black trousers and formal black shoes can be worn. Boys’ navy or black suits can also be worn to a First Holy Communion (if allowed by the parish). First Communion outfit requirements can be gathered from specific parishes.
