Piano Bench Cushions
Adding a piano bench cushion to your piano bench is the best way to add comfort and style to look and feel of your piano. Piano benches that have a wooden top are often made to match the finish of the piano, making for a unified look. The downside is that wood top benches are uncomfortable to sit on, especially for an extended period of time. A bench cushion will add much needed comfort, allowing the piano player to sit at the piano for longer periods of time. This makes practicing and playing the piano more enjoyable and results in a more satisfying experience.
If you already have an upholstered bench, then you know how comfortable they are. A cushion really makes a big difference. In addition to comfort, adding a cushion to your bench will add color and style, which is often lacking. I often feel that although the wood of your piano and bench may be beautiful, it’s nice to break up the look a little with a stylish bench pad. Fortunately there are many colors and designs to choose from when considering a bench cushion.
Piano bench cushions are made by a number of reputable manufacturers, and they all have a wide variety of color choices, making it easy to find the cushion that best meets your design needs. Some cushions have beautiful tapestry designs depicting scenes or images. All bench cushions come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses, making it easy to find a cushion that will both fit your bench, and provide the amount of thickness you desire.
Exact measurements are usually not needed since most cushions have a rolled edge. The best thing to do is measure the width and length of the top of your bench, and then round it off the closest inch. And then choose a size that comes closest to your measurements.
The tufted cushions come in a 1″ thickness, which provides plenty of comfort. The inside of the cushion is made of 1″ foam padding which holds it firmness and shape. The cover of the cushion is made of a soft polyester fabric that is resistant to stains and is reversible.
A cashmere cushion has a boxed edge instead of a rolled edge. Again it is not imperative to have an exact measurement, so you can round off your bench measurement to the nearest inch and choose from the many available sizes. These cushions come in both 2″ and 3″ thickness, are soil resistant, reversible, and very comfortable.
The tapestry cushions are the most decorative cushions available. They are available in a number of standard sizes and come in a 1″, 2″ or 3″ thickness. The tapestry design is on the top of the cushion, and then you choose a color for the bottom and sides of the cushion. They can also be made with tapestry design on both sides. One of the largest selling tapestry cushions is the Keyboard and Rose cushion, which has a background of white and black piano keys, and a foreground of roses with leaves. Another favorite is the Grand Piano Tapestry Cushions picturing an array of grand pianos. Other tapestry choices include: Violin and Horn; Children of the World; Music Notes; Holiday; Championship Golf; Horses; Hunter; and Beethoven’s 5th – each with its own unique color scheme and design.
All of these cushions are attached to the bench with 3 sewn-in matching tie strings that tie underneath the bench top. You simply lift the seat top to expose the music compartment, then wrap and connect the ties in a bowknot. This keeps the cushion firmly in place so that it will not shift around.
One important consideration is choosing the thickness of your cushion. While a 1″ thick cushion will suffice for most people, others desire a thicker cushion for extra comfort. Two and three inch thick cushions also act as a boost for younger piano players, helping them to reach the keys better, and to attain proper playing position.
All of the piano bench cushions come in a number of standard sizes that will meet the measurement requirements for most piano benches. However, it is important to note that all cushions can be custom made to fit any bench no matter what the measurements are.
