The World’s Most Famous and Expensive Tiaras
Tiaras have become an essential part of the bride’s wardrobe or things to wear on their wedding day. It makes them feel like a princess at least for a day. Although tiaras are no longer limited to royalty, weddings or even humans, it is still interesting to know how much or how far people are willing to go to get their own elaborately designed headpiece. The following are examples of extremes involving these crowns.
Historically, the use of tiaras has been exclusive to those with blue blood or those assumed to be gods. The advent of technology has helped made alternative materials and methods of manufacturing accessories more affordable. However, there are still numerous instances when members of royalty or individuals of prestige and rank outdo themselves and find ways to flaunt their wealth.
It is common for people of royalty to show and be proud of what ornate possessions they have. This is most especially true in several parts of Europe where monarchies still exist and thrive. Although it is said that they hold no great power over government, they are still allowed to showcase their treasures as such.
England has arguably the most records regarding tiaras. Queen Elizabeth II holds the world’s record of having the largest collection of tiaras. It is said to be the most precious collection as well. A large number of these have been worn during state affairs. Most of these pieces have either been handed down from her ancestors or received as gifts from other heads of state.
The Emerald Queen Victoria Tiara designed and given by Prince Albert was said to be worth at least $2.5 million. However, its current whereabouts are a mystery. Princess Margaret, the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II also had a valuable tiara in her possession, worth at least $1.7 million. The princess wore the piece at her wedding day and had the added function of being convertible to a brooch or a necklace.
In other parts of Europe, a tiara from an Italian Princess was sold for the price of at least $2 million. The tiara included an 8 carat diamond in the shape of a pear as its centerpiece. It is now part of the Princess Maria Gabriella de Savoia Italian Jewelry Collection.
Most surprising, one of the most expensive tiaras to date was not made for a member of the royal family. It was not even made for a person. In Thailand, a young designer named Riwin Jirapolsek created a tiara worth $4.2 million in diamonds for his dog. The designer during an interview indicated that he wanted to make his Maltese feel special, which was already aged 15 years at the time the tiara was made.
With the demand for tiaras growing steadily, it is no wonder that designers are looking for their next inspiration designing for royalty or the wealthy. It is during these times that designers are free to unleash their creativity. While modern bridal tiaras are substantially more affordable than these extremely pricey tiaras, all tiaras are connected to the same rich tradition of making the wearer look and feel like someone special.
