Wedding on a Budget – ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

With the average British Wedding racking up a £19,000 bill, many women are struggling to make their dreams a reality and justify the costs. With shows like ‘Don’t Tell The Bride’ giving lucky couples £12,000 for their big day, it can be a worrying sign that even they are struggling to stick within their budget.

I got married at 19 years old. It was a beautiful day – the most wonderful of my life. I had a beautiful ivory Wedding Dress, pearls, a full length veil, and beautiful rings. The church was decorated in a subtle and elegant way, the music was wonderful, my man was dressed up to the nines in a gorgeous suit, and the flowers were perfect. I had everything I could have wanted, including the most stunning wedding cake I have ever seen – and it tasted even better (if that’s even possible!). We even had a lovely reception with full Caribbean buffet to boot. And how much did this PERFECT big day cost? £3000.

Honestly.

So you can imagine how I struggle to come to terms with the fact that women are spending the equivalent of their child’s University costs simply to have a wedding. I personally feel it’s unnecessary to say the least. And if you are seeking a way to curtail your costs then read on to find out how I did it, and maybe you will be a little richer than the woman sitting next to you with a little smug look on her face.

My wedding took a total of 3 months planning. I say ‘planning’, but really it was more discussion until one month before the day… We knew we had a tight budget, so we called upon family and friends to assist things such as decoration.

I chose my dress 2 months before we got married. Luckily for me it was the first dress I tried on in a shop 5 minutes from my house. It was a small local dress shop on the outskirts of London where I was living. Shops like these are guaranteed to be cheaper than your boutiques in central London and Essex. The shop assistant pulled it off the rack for me and I hated it. I tried it on to be polite – she insisted I would love it if I put it on. And boy was she right! It fit me perfectly – no potentially costly adjustments needed. I LOVED it with all my heart – and more importantly, I loved me in it. I felt beautiful, and when she placed the full length veil on top of my head I felt more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. Had I had friends or family with me I’m sure they would have been in tears, but I’d popped in there on a whim, figuring I’d just see what they had.

I shopped around a little and then went straight back and bought it, for a whopping £205. The veil was £50 (she did a deal on the basis I’d bought the dress, which I’m sure you’ll find most little independent dress shops will be willing to do). Opposite the shop was Debenhams where I found shoes that matched the colour of the dress perfectly, and they were only £20.

My husband’s suit took a little longer, but only because he has an annoying habit of looking stunning in most things. We took roughly an hour in Moss Bros until we decided, and again the total was £250. We decided that getting an ordinary suit was a better investment because that way he can always wear it again. Dressing it up as a wedding suit was easy – a handkerchief in the breast pocket has an immediate effect, as does a flower.

I had 2 bridesmaids who understood my budget and offered to buy their own dresses – thank God! I took a while finding the right one but eventually settled on a blue dress from Monsoon which was within their budgets and which they promptly went out and bought.

We had a church wedding, which cost us roughly £150 in fees, and the organist was a friend of ours who played for free.

The biggest worry for us was of course the reception. Everywhere was expensive – after all, not only was this a wedding but it was London. Upon hearing the word ‘wedding’ venues hike their prices, so my advice here would be to avoid the word like the plague until you have a quotation. We negotiated a good price of £700 (down from £2000) with the hotel we were planning to have our wedding night at, but it was out of our budget still. Negotiation is the key word though – the worst thing someone can say is no, so give it a go.

Eventually we weighed up our options and decided that the smartest option was to have the reception at the church. After all, everyone is already there so it’s definitely convenient, and it saves having to fork out on decorating two venues.

By opting to have our reception this way we saved hundreds. All we had to pay for was the food, and we managed to feed 60 people by getting a friend of the family to do a Caribbean buffet. Caribbean food is really quite cheap. The main ingredients are easy to come by, such as rice, and is cheap in bulk. We bought everything we needed for £150 at a market in Dalston. If you can then send black people to buy your food for you – the price they quoted me was always more than what they quoted my mother in law, so if you can then leave this to your man or his family. If you can’t do that then negotiate like hell and they might lower the price…

The cake was the most extravagant thing, but only because of how beautiful it looked. It was the same price as an average wedding cake (£250) yet it was 3 huge tiers of chocolate cake, filled with chocolate sponge with cream and real fruit pieces in the cream. It was decorated in stunning hand made brown and white chocolate flowers, and became the talking point of the wedding. People still talk about it today. We found it in a small cafe in central London that specialises in chocolate cakes. They supersized the wedding cake for free too – which was a lovely gesture.

All the little details such as decorations came together with the help of my husband’s family and friends. They took the worry out of my mind by taking on that responsibility and ensured we had bonbon favours with sugared almonds and decorated flowers. The total cost of all the decoration and food and flowers came in at under £1000. The key to that is sourcing everything locally – independent stores, yet again, are best.

We played our music over the speakers in the church for the reception, and as for transport, well I spotted a white London Taxi and started chatting to the driver. He was very friendly and very willing to negotiate and did us a very good deal of £300 for the whole day. He even dressed up in a suit for us and decorated the car. And he’s a good friend to this day so it’s good to approach everyone friendly, rather than like business opportunities – that way you can get better deals and make friends along the way.

My family supplied my pearls as my ‘something old’.

And here’s the best tip I can offer you. Makeup and hair. Don’t get people to come to your house! They charge absolute fortunes for it! Again, avoid mentioning the W word for as long as you can. I went to my local hair dressers and arranged a trial and wedding day hair for just £100 all in, and all I had to do was be there in the salon on my wedding morning for her to do it for me. I then walked all of 100 yards to Debenhams (again) and got my makeup done at the makeup counter. I’d had a trial run with a woman there who I explained everything to, and made sure she’d be there in the morning of my big day to do my makeup. It cost me the total cost of a lip gloss. And I looked amazing.

The roses I wore in my hair were from a bouquet of flowers in Tescos that I bought for £5.

The beautiful photos were done as a skill exchange between my husband and the photographer. So effectively they were free.

Oh, and the invitations were from Clinton’s Cards in packs of 20 for £5.

Are you seeing my point? Budgeting is easy when you really think about it. If you need to budget then you can. And it really does pay off BIG TIME. Your big day doesn’t have to be your big spend. You can quite easily pull everything that you need together in style and on a shoestring. You just have to look at some of the photos to realise how beautiful our day was, and really, what’s the difference between my wedding and a £20,000 wedding? Only £17,000!

And to top it all off, asking for cash instead of gifts works a treat! Word it nicely in your invitations and you’re likely to make a lot of your money back…
